Foraged clays and wood ashes

25cm Hx 20cm D

Thrown on a kickwheel, reduction fired with gas and wood.

Note from the artist:

Hwa-byeong means "flower bottle" in Korean. This form is dear to my practice and is used in East Asia as a spirit server, a vase for wet or dry flower arrangements, or simply as a stand alone piece. Made of wild clays from the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Kaolin rich clay poured over the piece, The wood ashes are gathered from a local baker who fires with wood, and processed minimally to retail the natural fluxing properties of the ash. The clay used for this piece is coarser than usual, contributing a tactile aspect to the surface where the slip breaks on each rougher particle. The interactions between the materials create warm hues adding depth to the surface during the firing process.
